Thanks to everyone who signed and shared this petition, City of Sydney Council has abandoned its nonsensical plan to replace the pedestrian crossing and roundabout at the Mitchell Rd/Harley St intersection in Alexandria with traffic lights.

Traffic lights would have encouraged more traffic and higher, more hazardous traffic speeds on this local street and school route. They would also have imposed yet more delays on people walking and riding.

The City has instead listened to our calls to make this intersection safer. It is proposing two new raised crossings on the southern and western arms of the roundabout, and a speed hump before the existing at-grade crossing on the northern arm. There is still room for improvement, e.g., a crossing on the eastern arm, speed humps before the new crossings, and a safer posted speed limit. But this is a big step in the right direction. Thank you, City of Sydney!

Unfortunately, the City is still pressing ahead with its bizarre plan to rip up the roundabout and pedestrian crossing at the nearby Mitchell Rd/Maddox St intersection, and install costly, hazardous and pedestrian-delaying traffic lights. They also want to build a new road between this intersection and MacDonald St, which will of course turn MacDonald St into a major rat run.

City of Sydney promised us "a city for walking, cycling and public transport" and action on climate change. Building more roads and prioritising traffic over people on local streets is misaligned with these commitments.
