Growing up, I have vivid memories of visiting Shri Sammed Shikharji, a place that resonates deeply with peace, spirituality, and nature's pristine beauty. An emblematic pilgrimage site for Jains worldwide, it is not just a sacred space but also an ecologically vital landscape that teems with biodiversity unique to the Parasnath Hill region in Jharkhand. However, this sanctuary is under threat from commercial interests and unchecked development that disregard its spiritual significance and ecological sensitivity.

Shri Sammed Shikharji, also known as Parasnath Hill, stands as a holy site for millions of Jains, the heart where Moksha—a state of liberation from the cycle of birth and rebirth—is attained. It is a sacred retreat where twenty of the twenty-four Tirthankaras, revered spiritual teachers in Jainism, have attained Nirvana. This sacredness is intrinsic to the cultural and spiritual heritage of Jains, necessitating the highest level of protection.

Conversely, beyond its spiritual gravitas, Sammed Shikharji is an ecological marvel. It comprises rich forests and rare wildlife, including several endangered species, providing a crucial ecological balance to the region. Protecting such biodiversity should be paramount not just for its ecological benefits but also as an ethical obligation to future generations and the continuity of the planet's life forms.

Despite its cultural and ecological significance, the hill faces risks from infrastructure expansion, tourism commercialization, and mining activities. These developments threaten to irreparably harm the site, altering the landscape and potentially leading to an ecological collapse. The hill's dense forests, vital for preserving carbon dioxide levels and home to many rare species, face severe threats as roads are widened and new constructions emerge.

We are calling on the Government of Jharkhand and all relevant authorities to immediately recognize the spiritual and ecological importance of Shri Sammed Shikharji and designate it as a protected area. Measures should include controlling developmental activity, preventing harmful commercial exploitation, and promoting sustainable tourism practices that respect the site's sanctity.

We urge proper compliance with environmental laws and a strong regulatory framework to safeguard this irreplaceable sanctuary. A dedicated task force should be established to oversee the preservation efforts, ensuring the involvement of environmental experts, local communities, and Jain spiritual leaders.

This petition is a clarion call to all who hold dear the preservation of culture, spirituality, and natural biodiversity. Shri Sammed Shikharji is a jewel of our heritage and an ecosystem needing our urgent protection. Now is the time to act decisively to conserve this invaluable site for posterity.
