The Issue

Students walk into schools each day hoping to learn and grow, navigate friendships and discover their own potential. But for many, a nagging uneasiness clouds the day: the security of their schools. Windows and doors commonly offer little protection, gates may be more ornamental than secure, and emergency readiness ranges widely. Schools, which ought to be sanctuaries, are in our modern world closer than ever to being killing grounds.

Our children deserve better. They deserve to have the environment prioritize education, not fear. This is why we are calling for the federal government to give an annual grant of $250,000 to every school — tiers would be adjusted based on size. This money provided resources to schools for purchasing necessary security enhancements such as bulletproof doors and windows, durable entryways, state-of-the-art surveillance equipment, and emergency communication systems.

Each school should also have a trained School Safety Officer for every 500 students regardless of the size of the schools. These officers are not the front line of protection — they stand between students and staff from harm by conducting emergency drills, creating a safe atmosphere so that teachers can concentrate on teaching rather than constantly surveying for potential threats.

There is evidence to support their effectiveness. Schools that implement a layered security approach and have dedicated and trained staff report approximately 30 percent less non‑weapon violence or threats (NCES.ed.gov). and improved overall student well-being. Prevention is the best, and most cost-effective (emotionally and fiscally) strategy Proven preventive measures are in place to save tragedy before it strikes.

It’s time to reclaim the school from being a building and turn it into a safe, nurturing environment where no child is not learning, because they’re afraid. Stand with us in demanding that our government make such crucial grants available, and require trained officers to be present on every school campus.
