Dear President Sands,

As Cleveland State students, we are concerned with the forced re-opening of many classes during the new COVID-19 surge.

Cuyahoga County has the 2nd highest per capita infection rate out of all 88 Ohio counties. Those with underlying conditions are more vulnerable and likely to experience severe effects. Many students at the college come from communities which are documented to experience disproportionate infection rates due to institutional discrimination. The current “new normal” approach not only jeopardizes the lives of us who are high-risk, it also puts our families at risk due to the high percentage of commuter students.

According to a CDC study published in the Wall Street Journal, it takes roughly 27 minutes for an infected individual wearing a cloth mask to pass the virus to another individual wearing a cloth mask, 1 hour if they’re both wearing surgical masks, and 25 hours if they’re both wearing N95s. Most lecture classes at CSU range from 1hr 15min to 2hrs 50min. This means that the only masks that will effectively protect us are N95s.

In order to keep our community safe, we ask that you make these commitments:
- Commit to giving students in all courses the option to attend their classes remotely
- Commit to proper social distancing in all in-person classes
- Provide N95 masks and enforce that these are worn at all times
- Require CSU residents as well as students, staff, and faculty who attend in-person classes to test weekly
- Restrict dining halls to only grab-and-go in order to prevent the congregation of large unmasked groups

These commitments MUST be made in order to protect students, staff, and families, as well as to prevent further overcrowding of hospitals. We believe your current protocols will lead to mass infections, which will inevitably leave you no other option than to close down the school. Grades will drop and students will not be able to maintain their GPAs.

You are responsible for protecting our community. We hope you make the right decision.
