Safe Crossings Now: Petition for Intersection Safety at Twin Hickory Lake Drive

The Issue

Summary:

Hi Neighbors,

Let's talk about something that's been on all of our minds: the safety of our kids and families at the Twin Hickory Lake Drive intersection. You know the spot – where Twin Hickory Lake Drive meets Hearthstone Drive and Hickory Bend Drive. It's not just a crossroads; it's where our daily lives intersect with real danger. Just think about it: in the last couple of years, we've seen 13 crashes (6 of 13 in 2023) and that number's only going up. Not to mention the close calls and fender benders that never make it into the official stats.

This intersection isn't just a problem because of its layout or the hill on Hickory Bend Drive. It's busy – way busier than it used to be, especially with folks trying to skip the Short Pump traffic. We're talking about a spot that's a stone's throw from our kids' schools. So, what are we going to do about it? We need to get the powers that be to take a fresh look at this place – a real, thorough safety check. And then, let's get some action – maybe it's new traffic signals, maybe it's speed bumps or better signs. But whatever it is, it's got to make things better without causing new headaches during rush hour.

We, the undersigned residents, urge The Board of Supervisors for Henrico County and the relevant authorities to:

  1. Conduct a comprehensive safety audit of the intersection in the rush hour and at other times/ days of the week.
  2. Implement immediate interim safety measures to prevent further accidents.
  3. Explore long-term solutions such as traffic signal modifications, the addition of speed bumps, enhanced signage, no left turns, or any other measures deemed appropriate by traffic safety experts. Primarily in the rush hour this is a very traffic-heavy road and the solutions considered should not exacerbate existing bottlenecks or create additional ones.
  4. Increase awareness and enforcement of traffic rules in the vicinity of the schools to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.
