Petition for Safe and Accessible Access to South Beach, Aberaeron

To: Ceredigion County Council, BAM Nuttall, and Relevant Authorities

We, the undersigned, urge Ceredigion County Council and BAM Nuttall to ensure that safe and accessible access to South Beach, Aberaeron, is provided upon completion of the sea defence works. Specifically, we are calling for the installation of both stairs and a ramp to guarantee that the beach remains accessible to all members of the community.

Why This Matters:

Ensuring Inclusivity and Accessibility
South Beach is an essential community space, used by people of all ages and abilities for walking, relaxing, and socialising. Without a properly designed access route, elderly residents, individuals with disabilities, families with pushchairs, and those with limited mobility will be unable to safely reach the beach. A ramp would provide wheelchair users and those with mobility needs a means to access the beach safely, while stairs would provide a practical solution for the majority of visitors.

Preserving a Vital Community and Tourism Asset - Aberaeron is a popular coastal destination, and South Beach plays a crucial role in attracting visitors to the town. Easy and safe access to the beach enhances Aberaeron’s appeal and supports local businesses that rely on tourism. Restricting access could have a negative economic impact, reducing footfall to nearby shops, cafés, and attractions.

Safety Considerations - Without proper access, individuals may attempt to climb down unstable or uneven surfaces, increasing the risk of injury. Ensuring a well-constructed access point with a secure ramp and steps will promote safety and prevent potential accidents.

A Sensible and Long-Term Solution
Given the significant investment in the sea defence works, it is only logical that accessibility is incorporated during the construction phase. This is a long-term infrastructure project, and failing to provide adequate access now would mean additional costs and disruptions in the future if accessibility concerns need to be addressed later.

Our Request:
We request that Ceredigion County Council and BAM Nuttall acknowledge the design phase proposal to include stairs and a ramp during the construction phase for South Beach access. This would ensure that the beach remains accessible to everyone, aligns with the principles of inclusivity, and maximises the benefits of the sea defence works for the entire community.

We urge decision-makers to listen to the voices of local residents, visitors, and business owners and to take action to preserve fair and equal access to South Beach.

Rydym ni, sydd wedi llofnodi isod, yn annog Cyngor Sir Ceredigion a BAM Nuttall i sicrhau bod mynediad diogel a hygyrch i Draeth y De, Aberaeron, yn cael ei ddarparu ar ôl cwblhau'r gwaith amddiffyn rhag y môr.
Yn benodol, rydym yn galw am osod grisiau a ramp fel bod y traeth yn dal i fod yn hygyrch i bob aelod o'r gymuned.

Heb lwybr mynediad wedi'i ddylunio'n briodol, ni fydd trigolion oedrannus, unigolion ag anableddau, teuluoedd â chadeiriau gwthio, a'r rhai â symudedd cyfyngedig yn gallu cyrraedd y traeth yn ddiogel. Byddai ramp yn fodd i ddefnyddwyr cadeiriau olwyn a'r rheiny ag anghenion symudedd gael mynediad diogel i'r traeth, tra byddai grisiau'n darparu ateb ymarferol i'r mwyafrif o ymwelwyr.

Gallai cyfyngu mynediad gael effaith negyddol ar yr economi, gan leihau nifer yr ymwelwr i’r siopau, caffis ac atyniadau cyfagos.

Ystyriaethau Diogelwch:
Heb fynediad priodol, gall unigolion geisio dringo i lawr arwynebau ansefydlog neu anwastad, gan gynyddu'r risg o anafiadau. Byddai pwynt mynediad wedi'i adeiladu'n dda gyda ramp a grisiau diogel yn hybu diogelwch ac yn atal damweiniau posibl.

Ateb Synhwyrol a Hirdymor:
O ystyried y buddsoddiad sylweddol yn y gwaith amddiffyn rhag y môr, mae hi’n rhesymegol cynnwys hygyrchedd yn ystod y cyfnod adeiladu. Mae hwn yn brosiect seilwaith hirdymor, a byddai methu â darparu mynediad digonol yn awr yn golygu costau ychwanegol a tharfu yn y dyfodol os bydd angen mynd i'r afael â phryderon hygyrchedd maes o law.

Rydym yn gofyn i Gyngor Sir Ceredigion a BAM Nuttall gydnabod cynnig y cam dylunio i gynnwys grisiau a ramp ar gyfer mynediad i Draeth y De yn ystod y cyfnod adeiladu.

Byddai hyn yn sicrhau bod y traeth yn dal i fod yn hygyrch i bawb, yn cyd-fynd ag egwyddorion cynwysoldeb, ac yn golygu y byddai pawb yn y gymuned yn elwa ar effaith gadarnhaol y gwaith amddiffyn rhag y môr.
