I play the Jew s harp a little, she offers in one typically awkward getting-to-know-you moment. The naive-style puppet animation has similarities to the Adult Swim series Moral Orel and Mary Shelley s Frankenhole, on which Johnson worked, as well as his stop-motion animated episode of Community (series creator Dan Harmon is an executive producer here). Written by Kaufman and directed by Duke Johnson, Anomalisa features a cast that includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan, and David Thewlis and tells the story of a man who “struggles with his inability to connect with other people.” That’s about all we know for now, but the pic finally got off the ground when Johnson and Community creator Dan Harmon launched a Kickstarter for the production. Anomalisa is a beautiful exploration of that terminal lassitude. or gaze out the window to find a man masturbating in the office park across the way? With Anomalisa, Kaufman makes the case for a kinder and gentler treatment, and he might be on to something. The unflinching realization that we are all alone in this indifferent world has never hurt quite so good. A former love lives there and the chance at a reunion drives him through his mundane existence with the hope of connecting with another soul. Did we mention it s also a stop-motion animation movie and pretty much a masterpiece? Michael experiences such a breakthrough, or thinks he does, only to have it implode and crumble back into itself in a scene that is so wonderfully Kaufman-esque: a chorus of Noonans offering themselves at Michael’s feet, the death of love, the implied womp womp of a sad-trombone ending (not literally, of course). In terms of actual music, it’s surprising how little of Burwell’s music features into “Anomalisa,” considering that the play was first staged in concert with a live orchestration. Michael and Lisa, on the other hand, are more photorealistic. He doesn’t connect with his wife or his son. And then the ice melts, and they connect — over a Cyndi Lauper song, of all things. Life is lonely and cold, it says, leavened only briefly, if you’re lucky. His job — giving speeches designed to improve efficiency in customer service call centers — can’t fulfill what’s lacking in his existence, even if he’s somewhat of a celebrity in that field. His darkly funny early interactions with various people — a seatmate on his flight, a chatty cab driver, the Fregoli Hotel desk clerk and bellboy — all suggest his barely contained impatience with their invasive behavior and ingratiating small talk. Among the variety of films that will be playing at the fest are Charlie Kaufman’s stop-motion animated pic Anomalisa and director Jean-Marc Valle’s (Wild, Dallas Buyers Club) drama Demolition, and the first images for both films have been released online as a result. Like every other scene in the film, it’s infused with melancholy, but it’s also surprisingly sweet. Even the upscale, bland modernity of the suite that Michael checks into is observed with sly humor; it s an instantly recognizable environment rendered absurd by the directors clarity of vision. It’s so well done that you quickly forget you are watching — for lack a better word — “puppets.” When the camera lingers on a character or zooms into their eyes, you are lost in the emotion of the moment.
