If a Hard Brexit is delivered by the government, they will use it as a gateway to withdraw Britain from the European Convention of Human Rights. This convention is the most meaningful international law that protects our rights. That’s why we launched They're Your Rights - the campaign to save human rights from the process of Brexit.
We are taking a bus to Brussels to convince EU leaders that there should be no free trade deal with the UK, unless the UK remains a signatory to the European Convention on Human Rights. You can donate to the cause here: https://www.gofundme.com/dont-let-brexit-destroy-your-right
The past fortnight has seen the launch of the They’re Your Rights report: http://www.89up.org/report/theyre-your-rights-fight-them
We wrote a letter calling for the EU not to do a free trade deal with the UK without guarantees the UK won’t repeal human rights protections. The letter was published in The Observer (https://www.theguardian.com/law/2017/feb/21/top-lawyers-warn-of-human-rights-crisis-after-brexit?CMP=share_btn_tw) and was signed by some of the country’s leading lawyers and legal academics, including Baroness Helena Kennedy QC, Sir Geoffrey Bindman QC, Professor Francesca Klug OBE, Lord Anthony Lester QC, and Sir Paul Jenkins KCB QC and many others.
We were featured on BBC Radio 5 Live (listen from 1:10:10 at http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08dnptx) where we unveiled our plans to send campaigners on a bus to Brussels to tell the EU that any trade deal with the UK will need to guarantee our human rights.
We explained in the Independent (http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/brexit-european-convention-on-human-rights-dont-let-them-a7598611.html) why there are dangers to peace on the European continent if we remove fundamental rights from UK law and the pressing need to take action now. We highlighted this point with the example that ‘a Britain outside of the ECHR could trade torture equipment to the US or do trade deals in exchange for military intelligence with the world’s tyrants.’
Finally, our article in the Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/sashy-nathan/brexit-human-rights_b_15082740.html?1488387516&) details the motivations and aims of our campaign to take a bus to Brussels.
There is a direct threat to the future of human rights in the UK post Brexit. We need your support to fight for those rights. Please donate to our campaign so that we can ensure that our rights are not on the table for negotiation in any Brexit deal: https://www.gofundme.com/dont-let-brexit-destroy-your-right
Cheers,
James
