I am seeking permission to publish transcripts of these media mentions here so that people with hearing impairments can read it and those with vision impairments can get a description of any video.
In Channel 9's news report, the Transport Minister, Hon Stephen Mullighan MP was quoted as making a very confusing statement. The report explained how the existing Tonsley station would be permanently removed to make way for the bridge. Then Mr Mullighan was quoted as saying, "“Trains will continue to service Tonsley Station until work on the Flinders Link Project is completed by 2019.”
I am not sure what to make of that statement. Was the Minister misquoted? How can Tonsley Station continue to be in service if it has been removed? Unless, he is referring to Clovelly Park station and has prematurely renamed it.
This seemed to have happened in the Public Works Committee Paper (No. 343) that was tabled in parliament on 17 October 2017 the details of which I queried in "Further Information" on the petition page.
I wonder whether this is going to be a trend from our State Government. If politicians are already referring to Clovelly Park Station as 'Tonsley' or the 'New Tonsley Station', how are we supposed to interpret their responses while the original Tonsley Station near Sturt Rd is still in existence and operation? This is not clear communication or effective engagement with the community.
Is someone purposely trying to confuse the issue by referring to the Clovelly Park Station (at Alawoona Ave and Tonsley TAFE) as Tonsley (which is the name of the existing station near Sturt Rd)?
(If one renames Clovelly Park Station as "Tonsley", then there is no reason to say that there won't be a "Tonsley" Station, even though there won't be a station at the southern end of Mitchell Park where it's needed.) Am I too cynical? Are our decision makers genuinely confused and not aware of which station is which on the Tonsley line?
No wonder residents have been having trouble obtaining clarity about the future of Tonsley Station and Flinders Link from the State Government.
I suggest that whenever you have any communications about the future of any of the stations along the Tonsley line, to save confusion, be very clear about the location of the station to which you are referring; e.g. near Celtic Ave/Clovelly Park School (Mitchell Park station), near Alawoona Ave/Tonsley TAFE/Flinders at Tonsley (Clovelly Park station); near Lynton Ave/Birch Cr/Sturt Rd (Tonsley station).
