Run Saudi Aramco Out of Houston

The Issue

We, the undersigned, urge the Houston Marathon Committee (HMC) to reconsider Saudi Aramco’s sponsorship of the Houston Half Marathon, to be held on January 14, 2024.

HMC prides itself on promoting a culture of quality, integrity, and safety – admirable goals that make the Half Marathon a respected event in Houston. However, HMC’s partnership with Aramco contradicts these very principles.

Saudi Aramco, known in the US simply as Aramco, is an extension of the Saudi Arabian regime. The Saudi regime, under the leadership of Mohammed bin Salman, is notorious for its mistreatment of women, LGBTQ+ individuals, and religious minorities, as well as its restrictions on freedom of speech and its involvement in the extrajudicial killing of dissidents beyond its own borders. By associating with Saudi Aramco, HMC inadvertently provides cover for these actions, which run counter to the spirit of inclusivity and respect for human rights.

Furthermore, Saudi Aramco attempts to use partnerships like these to rebrand itself and divert attention from its affiliation with a regime known for human rights abuses. Such a move not only undermines the global struggle for human rights, but also tarnishes the reputation of the Houston Half Marathon as a symbol of community and integrity.

In light of these concerns, we urge HMC to reconsider its relationship with Saudi Aramco. Continuing this relationship would support actions that are in direct conflict with the spirit of Houston.

Let us ensure that the Houston Half Marathon remains a symbol of our shared values and a source of pride for all Houstonians.
