Save the Magpies

Save the Magpies
The issue
Save the magpies!
Recently in Sydney’s lower North Shore, Lane Cove Council has been granted a ‘Licence to Harm’ by the National Parks and Wildlife Service to kill two magpies that have been swooping a street. 14 attacks have been reported which 8 have resulted in injury. As a result, they intend to cull the magpies responsible.
Magpies are magnificent birds that can live up to 30 years, mate for life and are an iconic representation of Australia and its wildlife. Killing these creatures for acting upon their own nature is cruel. These birds swoop to protect their young from approaching predators, not to be vicious and to these magpies, humans could potentially pose a threat; a risk they are not willing to take! As humans, we should be able to relate to this natural instinct to protect our young, but instead some of us are setting out to kill these birds!
There are multiple strategies that you can use to prevent being injured from a magpie swooping, including;
- carrying an umbrella
- wearing a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses
- walking your bike through magpie swooping areas
- choosing a different walking/cycling path
None of these strategies involve killing these birds and these strategies are simple to follow and have proven to be effective.
Currently, these magpies are being targeted in the lower North Shore of Sydney, but how can we know that they will stop there? Please, sign this petition to get organisations involved to stop the culling of our beautiful Australian wildlife!
