The book begins with the exhibition of Merrick in a London penny gaff shop and his meeting with surgeon Frederick Treves. Following a biographical outline of Treves, the narrative goes back in time to recount the details of Merrick s early life, family and years living in the Leicester Union workhouse. Sandwich assures Treves that she has cared for lepers in Africa and is quite prepared for anything. However, when she sees Merrick taking a bath, she bolts from the room and refuses to take the job. Clarkson, with her signature warm and vibrating voice, is commanding and true. He goes to sleep sitting up, a posture which he must adopt due to the weight of his head. When Merrick arrives in London, his appearance incites a crowd to riot. Scott Ellis, who directed the Williamstown production, also staged the Broadway return. Deformities exist to be examined, but women must be covered up.
