Do The Right Thing, Rouses! Stop Throwing Away and Start Sharing!
The Issue
- Rouses corporate policy is that all "fresh perishables" are trashed vs donated by partnering with a group such as Second Harvesters who specializes in facilitating pick up of items food banks desperately need
- Rouses has 63 grocery stores; 52 in Louisiana, 3 Mississippi and 8 in Lower Alabama, 3 of the nation's poorest states. 6700 employees.
- In New Orleans alone- 1 out of 5 New Orleans citizens are "food insecure" meaning 1 out of 5 people you pass by each day does not know where the next meal may come from if at all. 1 out of 4 children in New Orleans do not know where their next source of food is coming from. New Orleans is in worse shape than the National average which is 1 out of 6 Americans.
- The pick up from a grocery store of equal size is about 47,000-100,00 pounds that's 23.5 TONS to 50 TONS of food per store per year.
- In this case multiplied by stores roughly, on the very low end estimate, 2000 TONS of food and supplies being trashed.
- With our city of New Orleans and the surrounding areas under siege with violence, poverty and homeless let's tell Rouses this is OUR community!
- Rouses single handedly could change the state of food insecurity especially during times of flooding, hurricanes and natural disasters.
- Rouses pays for dumpsters to be emptied. After a random sampling of stores in every state, it’s the consistent store policy despite employees who have suggested otherwise.
- Rouses has clearly stated they pull fresh perishables to make their party trays, “grab and go” and hot foods. It is implausible to believe all the bread pulled by the sell by date is becoming bread pudding or the office finger sandwiches.
- Be the change you want to see around you! We can put a huge dent in hunger right outside our front door!
Rouse's does support food banks, HOWEVER, it's primarily customer driven campaigns- you buy non-perishables and leave them in the red barrels-your hard earned money donated to help the needy meanwhile they throw away the bakery items, the produce, the cheese, the baby formula, the pet food, most everything-all of which can be donated.
Rouses wants us to "Help Stop Hunger At Home" but Rouses is trashing food. They want us to "Eat-Drink-Be Merry-Be Generous" while they fill dumpsters with food! Red Cross uses the slogan, "The greatest tragedy is indifference." Please sign and support this movement calling for this local company boasting of community supporting local farmers, local merchants, local teams to answer the call to feed our citizens and ends this intolerable waste!
