As stated in our petition, we believe that public money should not go to an organization which promotes racism, sexism, and other forms of disrespect towards various groups. We have no political affiliation as a group with any political party or organization. We are working with the school administration to come to a solution that benefits the students, parents, and administration. We look forward to continuing to work with the school administration to come to a beneficial conclusion. We are willing to speak with the press. Thank you.
Q: How is this petition fair? Anyone can sign it?
A: While anyone can sign this petition, as the creator of it I have access to a list of signatures. During the upcoming discussions with the Student Council and administration, I will bring a printed out list of these signatures as well as the petition itself as proof of who has signed it.
Q: Are you all supporting Hillary Clinton? Why are you Democrats always trying to do stuff like this?
A: As stated multiple times we have no political affiliation as a group whatsoever, and I, *personally*, am a Republican. Surprised you, didn't I?
Q: Are you going to move prom to the Gym?
A: No. We have no intention at all of moving prom to the gym. We simply wish to move it to another location comparable to the Trump club. We want to maintain the traditional Greeley prom experience.
Q: Will ticket prices rise?
A: It turns out Trump National Golf Course is one of the most expensive venues available. What this means is that by switching clubs, we will also be able to lower ticket prices! At Trump, the tickets were $150 per person, many of the places we are looking at would be ~$100 per person.
If you have any questions, please let us know.
Donald Trump is a poison behind whom we cannot stand.
Business mogul and potential Republican party candidate for the president of the United States, Donald J. Trump, has made, and continues to make, many disturbing and hateful remarks towards various groups.
Among these groups are the veterans and current people enlisted in the armed forces. Notably he’s gone after John McCain, who after being shot down in Vietnam was tortured in prison camps for 6 years. Trump said that McCain is,"not a war hero. He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured.”
Trump also has made bigoted remarks to various ethnic groups. In his speech announcing his candidacy for president, Trump claimed that, "[Mexicans are] bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists." This is not only untrue but disgustingly hurtful and racist. He continued his racist tirade masked as a speech for presidency with his remark “laziness is a trait in blacks… Black guys counting my money! I hate it.” Following that statement was a prejudiced comment demonstrating his ignorant belief of Jewish stereotypes. Trump commented: "the only kind of people I want counting my money are little short guys that wear yamakas every day."
Trump has also has a history of blatant and unapologetic misogyny. On his Twitter page he posted, "@ariannahuff is unattractive both inside and out. I fully understand why her former husband left her for a man- he made a good decision." This shows his dangerous belief that a woman’s values and relationships are solely based on her exterior appearance. He has also made comments about reporter Megyn Kelly saying she was behaving rudely towards him because she had, “blood coming out of her wherever.” (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/maureen-dowd-trump-megyn-kelly-period). Again, Trump is perpetuating an antiquated and sexist belief that a woman is unstable due to her menstruation, a natural, cyclical process that obviously does not compromise one’s stability as a human being. I, Teresa Tseng, cannot stand such outrageous statements.
It's not all black and white. Some might lose a few hours of work, or possibly not. It's impossible to predict if anyone will take his/her business there that specific night besides Greeley. Technically, no matter where we go, all other ecountry clubs in the area are lacking our monetary support and thus we could be considered as "punishing them." But as you know that's untrue. Our business does not make or break the standing of the Trump establishment and the welfare of his workers, yet taking our business to a more ethical establishment is ultimately better on principle. One could even argue that Trump making those deplorable statements is punishing his workers through not caring about the outcome of his words and its detrimental effects to his workers, in this case, a protest from our own establishment.
These quotes are just a fraction of the ludicrous, but pernicious things Trump has said. Clearly, Donald J. Trump does not care about many important groups in our nation, so why should Horace Greeley High School, a public institution, support him financially by paying thousands of dollars to have its Senior prom take place at one of his facilities? Although this might just be a drop in the bucket of Trump’s pool of revenue, on principle holding the prom here is immoral. The proud establishment of Horace Greeley High School should not associate itself with such blatant and hateful racism, sexism, misogyny, and disrespect.
I, Julian Robles, as both a proud Latino-American, and student of Greeley, deeply believe that the 2016 Senior Prom should be relocated to another one of the many well maintained country clubs in the area.
I, Teresa Tseng, as a proud female American, cannot support my school’s decision to hold prom at a country club that was founded by Donald Trump, a man who has consistently made bigoted comments against minorities and women.
Thank you Alexis, Sara, Ben, Amanda, Maya, and the one who cannot be named for all of the support and help!
