Change the law for the sentence of knife carriers, 6-8 years mandatory sentence
The Issue
My brother Lee Turner was just 33 years old when we became yet another victim of a fatal stabbing. Lee was a son, brother, uncle and loving Nephew. He had many friends and was very well loved. My brother's murderer claimed self-defense and was found not guilty of murder. He got 2 years suspended sentence for the knife he was carrying. 2 years for a knife that took somebody's life. Lee was stabbed once to the heart and his life was gone within minutes.
Grief has consumed my family since the incident on 10/10/2021. We do not want Lee’s death to be in vain, and we are starting this petition as part of a campaign to have the sentencing guidelines increased significantly in order to create a strong deterrent for carrying knives.
Currently, the maximum sentence for carrying a knife is set to 4 years and an unlimited fine
Who is to say that 1460 days will change a person’s decision to pick up a knife?
We are calling for a change in the law, for knife possession should lead to a 6-8 years mandatory sentence.
By having this law put into place we are hoping to significantly reduce the amount of knife victims and crime. People do not understand the risks of carrying a knife.
If you are carrying a knife you have intention of using it. Its not a toy there can never be any justification for carrying a knife. It will always end with a loved one lost.
Could it become your child in victim or offender position?
However, every day that goes by is another victim in exactly the same defenceless position as my brother was, no matter what sentence is given to the defendant it will never be enough.
