Residents of the Royal Borough of Greenwich and other road users are requesting the local council to put in place road calming measures. The segment of road from the Plumstead train station to the GIC (Mosque) Lenton Street traffic light is extremely hazardous for pedestrians with many Road Traffic Accidents with cars jumping the lights regularly.
Unfortunately, this irresponsible and negligent behaviour has caused a tragic loss of life of an 8-year-old child, further placing his father and brother in critical condition with potentially life-changing injuries still in the hospital.
The council needs to ensure corrective safety measures are put in place to avoid such tragedy, we undersigned request the following measures as a matter of urgency:
1) TWO raised Speed Humps are needed to break the speed in the segment concerned as follows:
First: Just after Foreland Street
Second: At Lenton street junction traffic light, we need a raised hump traffic island crossing with big white stripes and adequate lighting
2) A Speed Camera needs to be installed after Foreland street and before Lenton street traffic light.
3) The 20mph speed limit needs to be extended from Plumstead station to GIC traffic light (Lenton Street junction).
4) The timings of the traffic light signal need to be increased between green to red to enable sufficient time for pedestrians to cross the road.
5) The current cycle lane from Plumstead station to GIC traffic light segment needs to be vacated in the best interest of pedestrian traffic flow, current pedestrian pavement width is inadequate in line with pedestrian flow.
6) The cycle lane usage in above segment mentioned is disproportionate to pedestrian traffic flow.
On average in a week over 15,000 pedestrian journeys happen in the specific segment and clearly not adequate or safe for the purpose, especially for the vulnerable and with mobility issues.
7) Furthermore the cycle lane gets misused by electric scooters and electric bikes speeding past at significant speeds which are detrimental to pedestrian traffic.
8) The cycle lane outside GIC needs to be reclaimed for pedestrian traffic flow, as it is proven to be hazardous for pedestrians, with countless near misses.
9) The cycle lane should start after GIC traffic light.
10) Review the underpass to be reopened for pedestrian safety.
