Interstate 705 in Tacoma, Washington, USA is a short spur freeway of Interstate 5, acting as a large ramp onto its parent freeway. This foreboding structure not only disrupts the city's aesthetic but brings division and economic depression. It is time we take action to restore the beauty and vitality of downtown Tacoma.

History
     I-705 was completed on October 17th, 1988 - nearly 20 years after its dedication. The historic and convenient Tacoma Union Station, serving Amtrak, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and Union Pacific passenger trains was closed in 1984 for the construction of I-705 right on top of its old platforms. The interstate was, as was common, intentionally built through a minority neighborhood, displacing what were considered less important citizens.

Waterfront
     I-705 stands as a barrier between downtown Tacoma and its waterfront, preventing residents and tourists alike from fully enjoying this beautiful area. Moreover, it has caused the destruction of Tacoma Union Station - once a bustling hub for travelers.

Future
     By demolishing I-705, we can revive our downtown area, restoring it as an attractive destination for both locals and visitors. We can reopen our historic Union Station to passenger service, reconnecting downtown Tacoma. Tacoma Dome Station can stay open; it's well suited for potential future high speed rail projects. This is not just about aesthetics or economics; it's about reclaiming our city's identity and creating a brighter, more connected community for everyone who calls Tacoma home.
