In the aftermath of the death of difunto George Floyd, municipalities across the country have called for the removal of statues that represent the history of colonial violence. We, the people of Rio Arriba County, demand the immediate removal of the statue of Juan de Oñate located in Alcalde, NM on Rio Arriba County property. Oñate perpetuated cruel and inhumane violence against the Pueblos and was prosecuted and exiled by the Spanish for war crimes. He is not a symbol that fosters unity among our people and must be removed. In honor of MMIW / LGBTQ2+ relatives lost to continued colonial violence and in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement to end police violence, we demand the immediate removal of the Juan de Oñate statue.
