Mr. Campos and Mr. Marquez,
Buenos Dias les de Dios, I hope that this email finds you all well. The purpose of this communication is to submit signatures gathered over the last 72 hours via online petition in support of removal of the statue of Juan de Onate at the former Onate Center. Due to the restrictions of covid-19, an online petition was used to allow for social distancing. That being said, many of the signatures were submitted from residents from the region surrounding Rio Arriba County who have ties to the Valley, as well as current County residents. Regardless of region, the consistency and volume of the responses serve to amplify the sentiment that the statue of Juan de Onate must be removed immediately. This has been a movement that goes back well over 20 years and has involved the work of many dedicated activists.
As you may know, similar statues have come down across the US in addition to NASCAR's decision to ban the Confederate flag from their events. Demands for justice and equity in the wake of the death of George Floyd are gaining momentum, and the Espanola Valley should be no exception. In fact, as a matter of historical competency, we should be leading the way. The removal of a statue does not diminish any sense of cultural pride or history. In fact, the removal of statues that glorify violence allow the healing to begin, and the time has come to begin this process.
I ask that you receive and review these signatures in earnest. I am also requesting to be on the agenda for the next County Commission meeting to allow for public comment from the community of scholars, historians, community organizers and citizens who support this initiative. There is an action scheduled at the entrance to the Rio Grande National Heritage Center for Monday June 15th at 6PM organized by Pueblo and Chicano allies. I encourage County leadership to attend and to participate in the peaceful demonstration. I look forward to your response and to working together to make positive historic changes for future generations.
With Respect,
Luis Pena
