Dear (Insert name of MP),
LGBT rights are an important topic for many Canadians. I hope you will support the call for a formal apology for the unjust dismissal and treatment of LGBT soldiers, public servants, and members of External Affairs. As Canadians, I find it unacceptable when our elected government, at any point in history, mistreats any member of our nation.
Many government employees (soldiers, public servants, and officers) were unjustly dismissed from their jobs due to their sexual orientation. In addition to loss of their careers, this unpatriotic behaviour lead to trauma, health problems, and broken families for numerous LGBT Canadians. In October 1992, the Canadian Forces cancelled its discriminatory policy regarding homosexuality. It violated Canada’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms. For decades prior, the military was a hostile environment for LGBT soldiers. Public service and External Affairs employees were also targeted during this purge. Our government authorized the surveillance and persecution of LGBT individuals. This purge campaign was vicious and included attacks, threats, and harassment. There has never been an apology for these unpatriotic acts.
The “We Demand an Apology Network,” along with over 8,000 Canadians, (see http://chn.ge/1LOgmlV) are seeking an apology from the Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, on behalf of all Canadians. I fully support their demand. This apology is long overdue.
Please join the many voices and demand an apology. Be brave and sign the petition to show your support.
Signed,
(Insert your Name)
A Concerned Canadian
