As of February 9th, over 100,000 Americans have implored Governor Snyder to do right by Flint residents and ensure full water bill relief. Thank you for this. Solidarity is a mighty thing!
Last week, a proposal to send $30M to Flint passed the Michigan Senate. We await the House vote. However, with this $30M there's a catch: Flint residents would still be on the hook for sewage costs. According to State estimates, Flint residents would be refunded about 60% of their expensive water bills. 20% for commercial properties. We don't think this is what full water bill relief looks like, especially when you've endured what Flint residents have suffered--and continue to suffer.
Worse, the $30M appears to be only half of what is needed. According to Flint Administrator Natasha Henderson "the proposal passed last week by the state Senate would only keep Flint's water fund financially solvent until year's end." What could happen after then? More shutoffs. http://www.crainsdetroit.com/article/20160209/NEWS01/160209823/flint-official-30-million-from-state-for-water-bills-not-enough
Gov. Snyder, we need you to do the right thing. Make sure Flint residents are no longer charged for poison. Make sure they're refunded the correct amount. Make sure there are no more shutoffs because the City of Flint doesn't have enough money during this crisis of the State's making!
To the rest of us: keep spreading the word. Let our Flint neighbors know that we're here and we won't keep silent until there's real billing relief!
