Thanks, Everyone. It's Not Over.

Sadly, Royal Cinemas decided to show 50 Shades of Gray so I will be seeing my next three movies at some other theater. I want to make a correction that Mr. Novak drew my attention to: the movie is rated R, not NC-17. Royal Cinemas is not in the business of showing NC-17 movies. However, that this movie showing sadomasochism garnered an R rating is really worrisome (the sadomasochism was redefined by the MPAA as "some unusual behavior"). This movie represents a concerted effort of the pornography industry to mainstream their products. In the past, the porn industry's strategy was to take over unregulated industries: ie: new technologies. That's why porn products propagated so quickly on VHS cassettes, 900 numbers, and then the Internet. That's why there's porn products easily available on laptops, streaming video, cell phones, and tablets. Dominating new tech has given the porn industry very deep pockets ($97 billion dollars globally) so they think the time has come to forge into new territory: the mainstream. It's not enough for them to be on our phones: they want to be in our multiplex cinemas, where they can get new customers and gain credibility. 50 Shades has given them the opportunity, with its record-breaking opening weekend. Yeah, this flick is probably going to die fast, but this is just the beginning of this battle to bring material that would previously be considered X-rated or NC-17 rated into mainstream theaters. Please be aware that this fight to bring porn into the mainstream legally is going to continue, until the societal damage done by porn through addiction, abuse, and misery becomes obvious.
