Hi all,
After the formal submission of our petition to council, they made a commitment to investigate and report back. The report has been finalised and can be found here
It is lengthy, so to summarise.
From a Kensington perspective, this report is significant because it formally acknowledges that:
- Kensington experienced the only notable increase in heavy truck traffic following the West Gate Tunnel opening.
- The increase appears to be linked to toll avoidance, with trucks diverting onto local roads.
- Council accepts that mitigation is required and is pursuing:
- truck bans,
- turning restrictions,
- lower speed limits,
- corrected freight route guidance, and
- continued monitoring and advocacy with DTP
The report stops short of committing to implementation dates for the proposed truck bans because these require approval from DTP, but it represents the strongest formal acknowledgement to date that Kensington has experienced an unintended consequence of the West Gate Tunnel and that targeted interventions are warranted.
Unfortunately, there is an acknowledgement of the problem but it stops short of implementation dates due to the require application processes with DTP.
If you can I suggest that you:
- Email CoM and continue to keep them aware of the problem at hand. It hasn't plateaued out recently, it has gotten worse.
- Email Ellen Sandell (Greens) as our sitting member for the state . They know about the problem but the pressure needs to continue to keep this front of mind.
- Email Davvyd Griffths (Labour) as our sitting and future candidate for this years upcoming state election. It will be an election commitment.
