The Issue

Thirty years ago, my parents went through an educational system essentially identical to the one that serves children today. Despite the inestimable strides in technology and constantly evolving fields of expertise, the curriculum remains stagnant. Our schools continue to overlook essential life skills, comprehensive understanding of technology, and advanced career exploration, leaving students underequipped for real-world challenges.

It's an indisputable fact that our current education system was designed in an era vastly different from today. Take, for example, the countless countries that have followed the technological uprising and are teaching skills such as coding from first grade. The world has changed, and crucial life skills, such as financial literacy and interpersonal communication, go untaught. The National Education Association states that "students need more than academic knowledge to succeed," emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, and tech literacy.

Meanwhile, technology has advanced at a tremendous pace. Pew Research Center's study reveals that 77% of Americans go online on a daily basis, yet emphasis on understanding how this integral part of our lives works is scarcely found in our school curriculums.

Further, at a time when career paths have become more diversified than ever, limited career exploration restricts exposure to the expanding job market. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment in occupations requiring more education, training, and experience will grow faster than the average for all occupations between 2019 and 2029. Advanced exposure to such promising fields through our school curriculum is crucial.

By adjusting our educational curriculum to cover life basics, yield a comprehensive grip on technology, and enable advanced exposure to an array of professional paths, we enable our children to face tomorrow's world with confidence. Join us in requesting an overhaul of our school curriculum to meet the demands of the 21st century. Please sign this petition to support our young generation in gearing up for the future.
