The Virgin Islands Source published an article today about Vialet's promise to hold a Town Hall about the distillery planned for the west end of Mahogany Rd.
We hope everyone attends!
That meeting will take place on August 8 at 6:00pm in Frederiksted (location TBA). "Vialet told the Source that Apfel will appear at the Aug. 8 meeting with a Power Point presentation. DPNR Commissioner Jean-Pierre Oriol has also been invited and Vialet hopes he and others from the department appear to answer questions."
The earth change and building permits have not been revoked yet. While Commissioner Oriol can do that, he has not. The Board of Land Use Appeals has not acted yet although they are required to respond within 30 days of the Appeal being filed. The community needs to continue applying pressure on The Commissioner and the BLUA to pull the permits.
The building plans are available for public viewing in the Director's Office at DPNR. While we cannot take photos, anyone with expertise in interpreting plans for environmental concerns is encouraged to take a look and give us expert opinions to share at the Town Hall.
Senator Whitaker is drafting a bill to reverse the amendment (aka (b) or section 2) of Act 8569. The community needs to ask Senators to support and pass this bill. Please call them and discuss the matters with them. Their email addresses and phone numbers are available on the Senator's website.
Senator Vialet is also drafting a bill, but his bill is only to limit the amount of rum allowed to be produced on a farm, while still allowing factories to be built on Agricultural land. This does not address the environmental impact.
If you have interest into how this distillery will look, how it will operate, and what the environmental impacts will be - please attend this meeting!
If you are interested in presenting expert evidence to oppose the farm, please email us at prosperitystx@gmail.com.
