The Issue

Kids should have their phones. It's not just about convenience; it's about essential support and wellbeing. In today's world, students and teachers need every bit of support they can get, especially when facing challenges that might not be apparent to everyone at school. One stark example is the mental health of our youth. Studies show that approximately 49.5% of young people suffer from some kind of mental disorder. To take away a vital tool that offers solace and connectivity, like a cell phone, seems counterproductive and possibly harmful.

Cell phones are not only communication devices but also gateways to support. For students experiencing anxiety, depression, or any mental health crisis, having immediate access to loved ones or professionals could be life-changing. It offers a link to resources that school environments might not provide.

Additionally, in cases of emergency, having a cell phone can be a literal lifeline. Parents might need to reach their children for urgent matters, and vice versa. While the intention behind a no cell phone policy is understandable, considering disruption and distraction, a more balanced approach needs to be negotiated.

Rather than a complete ban, schools could implement structured guidelines for phone usage. Designated times and zones for phone use, educational apps during classes, and clear behavior expectations could be put in place. Training and workshops on healthy phone usage would equip students with the skills to manage their phone time effectively.

It's time to rethink and revoke the no cell phone policy to support the needs of our students better. Join me in calling for a more balanced approach that recognizes the essential role these devices play in students' lives.
