If you live in the Midlands, do join us at our public event in Coventry this Saturday (3 June). Entitled, ‘POWER PLAY: Is the Sex Industry REALLY empowering for women?’, it will examine the much-repeated trope that “sex work” is empowering for women.
Three of our speakers – Fiona Broadfoot, Esther and Kellie Ziemba – have personal experience of prostitution and the sex industry. The fourth speaker, Heli St Luce, grew up in the shadow of her mother’s prostitution and now lives in the Netherlands with its infamous red-light districts. These brilliant women will be complemented by an innovative interlude that we’ve called ‘Sugaring the pill’ that will feature a performance of young women’s writing about their experiences of webcamming and ‘sugar dating’.
It will be a unique opportunity to gain an insight into the ugly reality of the modern sex industry and the challenges facing those caught up in it.
It is more important now than ever to raise awareness of this reality – because this week we learnt that UCU (the University and College Union) have voted to “create a toolkit which supports informed and safe routes of entry into and exit from sex work”. We are considering our response to this.
