Hello all petition supporters,

Thank you for your support and I want to assure you all the petition is being noticed by our local Toronto City Councilor and others.

As you might be aware from previous updates, Toronto Humber Yacht Club’s lease will end on July 31, 2025 and they have submitted a request to have the lease renewed for another 20 years.

If you can forward the petition to all your friends to get their support it would be a huge help. If you want to help even more, please reach out to Councilor Amber Morley (tel: 416-397-9273) and her staff Mohamed Osman & Matt Cook or those in the city bureaucracy who are responsible for reviewing the renewal request, Thomas Kakamousia, Lauren Grosberg & Joseph Sergnese.

As I paddle the Humber regularly I’m aware of much that goes on at THYC. It’s become clear to me the club is being fed inside information about the lease renewal process.

1/ In all the years I’ve passed by the club, I’ve never seen a professional grounds crew working on their property. As a supposed “not for profit corporation” they have historically relied on member volunteers to “clean up” the property. On the morning of Thursday May 29 I saw a large grounds crew working hard to do a superficial clean up. It struck me as odd until on Friday May 30 a city truck was spotted on the property.

2/ A member of the THYC board contacted me to try to set up a meeting with me to discuss my concerns with the club. I received this email before I had started posting my emails to city government & city bureaucrats outlining my concerns. Somehow the board member was aware of all those concerns and tried to address them. Unfortunately the club’s disregard for the environment and public safety on the river were not easily justified.

It seems to me the best way to counter this apparent sharing of inside information with THYC is to ensure the decision makers within city government and the city bureaucracy know the public is aware of legion of past and present infractions to environmental regulations on the part of THYC as well as THYC members unsafe boating practices on the Humber River.

In the past I’ve included  Johanna Kyte (johanna.kyte@trca.ca) from Toronto Regional Conservation Authority. To date she has indicated TRCA are indifferent to the destruction of the TRCA property THYC sits on. But maybe with more public pressure TRCA might take their duty to protect the Humber Ravine more seriously.

I’ve also included Mayor Chow and the rest of city council in my emails to make them aware of how opaque and seemingly corrupt the lease review/renewal process has been to date.

Thank you all for your continued support and fingers crossed with enough voice being raised to stop the insanity of THYC’s actions on the Humber River, their lease will not be extended.
