Revitalise transport infrastructure in South East Sydney

Revitalise transport infrastructure in South East Sydney
The issue
South East Sydney, a dynamic and pivotal region of our bustling metropolis, is currently facing significant challenges when it comes to its transport infrastructure. Despite being home to vibrant communities and crucial business hubs, residents and commuters are grappling with inadequate public transportation services. This inefficiency is not just an inconvenience; it affects economic productivity, environmental sustainability, and the overall quality of life.
Currently, the public transport system in areas like Coogee, Maroubra, Malabar, Chifley, Matraville, Little Bay , La Perouse and surrounding suburbs is painfully underdeveloped and fails to meet the demands of an increasing population. Commuters often face long wait times, and limited routes which make daily travel a distressing ordeal. This situation is exacerbated during peak hours, causing unnecessary delays and frustration. An "express" bus from any suburb beyond Maroubra for example to Bondi Junction or the CBD (both key working destinations) takes over 1 hour - thats during off peak times.
The projected timeframe of ten to thirty years for the extension of the light rail from Kingsford to Maroubra, as well as the addition of the metro, is frustrating and impractical. Moreover, it is inequitable that the metro or tram line should terminate at Maroubra, leaving residents beyond without reliable and fast transport options.
Introducing true express bus routes with travel time under 30 minutes, and the introduction of light rail systems and the metro, we can significantly reduce travel times, ease congestion, and lower carbon emissions. Businesses will thrive as accessibility enhances, attracting more customers and talent to the area. Moreover, reliable and efficient transport services can improve social equity, providing equal access to opportunities for education and employment across diverse communities.
Let us unite in urging our policymakers, specifically Michael Daley, Member for Maroubra and Attorney General and John Grahams, Minister for Transport to address this pressing issue with the urgency and importance it deserves.
By signing this petition, we advocate for a South East Sydney that is more connected, sustainable, and prosperous. Please add your voice to support the transformation of our transport system for a brighter future.
