Revise the national curriculum for today's children

The Issue

Many parents are watching their children struggle in a school system that no longer works for them. England’s national curriculum and education model place too much pressure on children and do not reflect how young people learn best today. A full reform of the entire national curriculum and how learning is delivered is urgently needed.

This is not about adding more subjects. Children need smaller class sizes so teachers can support individual needs, and most schoolwork should be done during the school day, not sent home as homework that causes stress and takes away from family time, hobbies, reading and wellbeing.

Other countries have already moved towards modern, child-centred curriculum models that focus on skills, inclusion and wellbeing. For example, Finland’s national curriculum emphasises broad competencies such as thinking, digital skills, creativity and life skills alongside core subjects, and gives teachers flexibility to tailor learning. Wales has introduced a new curriculum with emphasis on skills, digital competence and wellbeing for all learners.

We call on the Department for Education to undertake a comprehensive reform of the national curriculum and classroom structure so it truly meets the needs of today’s children.
