Revise Roblox's game rating system for child safety
The Issue
As a primary school teacher, cyber safety educator and uncle to young nieces and nephews, I am deeply committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of children in the digital world. My mission is to inform and empower young minds so they can navigate the online space with confidence. It is with this commitment that I address a critical issue impacting our children’s safety on the single largest gaming platform globally – Roblox.
This image below is directly from the Roblox website - what "child development expert" would seriously put their name to the classification system witnessed in the video above?!
Roblox is a beloved platform for both children and adults, offering a plethora of games and experiences. However, the platform's current rating system is alarmingly ineffective. Parents should be able to trust that their children are accessing age-appropriate content by simply entering an accurate date of birth. Unfortunately, Roblox's ratings often misrepresent the content, leading to children being exposed to violence, horror, and adult themes in games rated as suitable for ages 5 and up.
This oversight is not only misleading but shows a blatant disregard for the wellbeing of their users, many of whom are young and impressionable. It is imperative that Roblox acknowledges and rectifies these discrepancies to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for their youngest users.
To address this issue, I propose that Roblox undertake the following actions:
1. Implement a more thorough and transparent content review process for experiences (games) hosted on their platform.
2. Make the default rating for newly created experiences set to “Moderate”. The onus is then on individual experience creators to prove the game is suitable for younger users.
3. Create a “kid” version of Roblox (similar in concept to YouTube Kids) where only select games, meeting strict content and safety benchmarks, qualify to be accessible.
These measures would greatly enhance the safety and appropriateness of content on Roblox, reassuring parents while allowing children to enjoy the creativity and fun that the platform offers without unnecessary risk.
We urge Roblox to take immediate action to protect our children, prioritize their safety, and maintain trust with its vast community. Please join me in calling for a revision of Roblox's game rating system to ensure our children are not exposed to inappropriate content.
