I’ve started a petition because I believe there needs to be a serious look at how child maintenance is calculated after a relationship or marriage ends.
When you’ve been married, you build a life together. You share bills, responsibilities, finances and often make decisions based on being a family.
Then you separate, and everything can change.
You can suddenly have two completely different households, two completely different incomes and two completely different financial situations.
But when child maintenance is calculated, the receiving parent’s income isn’t taken into account.
Should it really be that simple?
I’m not saying parents shouldn’t support their children — they absolutely should.
What I’m asking is whether the system should consider the financial circumstances of BOTH parents, particularly where there is a significant difference between the two households.
And there’s another side to this that I think needs to be talked about.
For people who have experienced financial abuse or financial control during a marriage or relationship, financial control doesn’t necessarily stop just because the relationship ends.
A system intended to support children shouldn’t unintentionally become another way for financial control to continue between separated parents.
This petition isn’t about taking money away from children.
It’s about asking whether the system is fair, whether it reflects the reality of separated families, and whether there should be greater consideration of both parents’ financial circumstances.
