Revise and improve anti-bullying policies in the WRDSB.

The Issue

Bullying in schools, particularly in the WRDSB, has remained a pervasive issue. A 2017 study revealed that around 20-25% of students are directly involved in bullying, whether as victims or bullies themselves (Menesini, E., & Salmivalli, C., 2017). It is well known that bullying leaves a long-lasting impact on students in areas such as mental health, academic performance and sense of belonging. Through my research, I have identified a significant bullying crisis, especially within marginalized communities in the WRDSB, that has remained prevalent despite anti-bullying efforts.

Ideally, I would like to see new policies implemented across the WRDSB that directly tailor to the unique needs of groups at risk of bullying. The solution is not as simple as a “one size fits all” policy, it has to be multifaceted. Through this campaign, I hope to make students’ voices heard, raise awareness about discrimination in schools, and push policymakers to make true, visible changes to their anti-bullying policies.
