The Problem: Waste Collection in Plumstead Needs Urgent Review

Residents across Plumstead and surrounding areas are increasingly concerned about the state of our streets due to the current waste collection system.

Greenwich Council currently collects general waste every two weeks, while recycling, food waste and garden waste are collected weekly. Whilst encouraging recycling is important, the current system is not working for many households in our community.

Many roads in Plumstead include larger households, multi-generational families and HMOs. For many residents, one general waste collection every fortnight does not provide enough capacity. The result is overflowing black bins, rubbish bags left beside bins, exposed waste, dirty nappies, unpleasant smells and an increase in flies and pests.

Residents have reported seeing rodents in residential streets, including during daylight hours. Overflowing waste and poor waste management create conditions where pests can thrive, creating concerns about hygiene, safety and public health.

Many residents are also unaware that they may be able to request a larger or additional general waste bin, leaving households struggling with insufficient waste capacity.

We believe residents deserve cleaner streets and a waste collection system that reflects the needs of our communities.

We are calling on Greenwich Council to:

• Review the current fortnightly general waste collection policy.
• Consider introducing weekly general waste collections in areas with higher demand.
• Improve communication about larger and additional bin assessments.
• Increase enforcement against fly tipping and irresponsible waste disposal.
• Improve pest control measures in areas affected by waste issues.
• Install CCTV where appropriate in areas experiencing repeated fly tipping.

This petition is not about blaming individuals. It is about asking for a waste management system that works for residents, protects public health and keeps our neighbourhoods clean.

We want Plumstead to be a place where residents can feel proud of the streets they call home.
