Review Hackney's Whiston Road access restrictions

Review Hackney's Whiston Road access restrictions
The Issue
Having been a resident of Hackney for the past five years, living at Northchurch House on Whiston Road, I have witnessed and experienced the impact of the recent access restrictions imposed by the Hackney council. With young children in tow, our daily routines have become unnecessarily complicated due to these changes. The council's decision to block Whiston Road, allowing access only to buses, badge holders, and emergency services, has left resident car drivers with no choice but to take a significantly longer route to reach their homes which impacted parents with young children and eldery people big time.
This detour is not just an inconvenience; it represents a significant waste of time and fuel for all affected residents. Additionally, the excessive rerouting has resulted in increased traffic congestion on surrounding roads, such as Queensbridge and Hackney Road, which contradicts the council's objective of improving air quality. This decision has inadvertently contributed to more pollution, rather than diminishing it.
Numerous studies have shown that increased vehicle idling and extended driving distances lead to higher emissions, undermining the efforts to create a cleaner environment in our community. According to a report by the Department for Transport, eliminating traffic inefficiencies is crucial for lowering emissions and enhancing local air quality.
We urge Hackney Council to reassess and review the current access restrictions on Whiston Road. A balanced solution must be reached that considers the needs of resident drivers while addressing environmental concerns. This could be achieved by implementing restricted access during peak pollution hours or providing permits for resident drivers who genuinely need to use this route or residents living on whiston road should be exempt from this restriction.
The wellbeing of Hackney's residents, their time, and resources should not be compromised in the pursuit of cleaner air. Instead, let us work together to find a solution that respects both the environment and the community's needs.
Sign this petition to support the call for Hackney Council to review and revise their current policy affecting Whiston Road.
