The Issue
The emotional impact on children due to current family court safeguarding practices—confusion, distress, and long-term insecurity—is real and lasting. Like many other parents, I have seen first-hand how these impacts can shake the foundations of a child’s sense of security and stability. It is crucial that safeguarding should not only protect children from harm but also safeguard them from unnecessary loss of a parental relationship, especially when allegations are unproven.
The UK family court system is meant to be a sanctuary of fairness and safety, yet its current practices can sometimes disregard the very core of a child’s well-being: their relationships with their parents. Although the system is meant to protect, it often fails those it aims to serve by overlooking the necessity of maintaining meaningful parental bonds unless substantial evidence dictates otherwise.
According to recent studies and reports, thousands of children are caught in court battles annually. Many of these children face the wrath of unproven allegations that lead to strained familial relationships — at a time when they critically need both parents for emotional stability and support. The trauma stemming from severed parental bonds without cause can hinder their emotional growth and overall well-being.
We call upon the UK Government to review and reform the safeguarding policies within family courts. The reform should include establishing clear guidelines that require substantial evidence before restricting a child's access to a parent. Additionally, safeguarding officers must receive advanced training to assess allegations accurately and sensitively, ensuring true cases of risk are separated from unfounded claims.
This petition seeks to inspire tangible change—ensuring that no child endures unnecessary emotional harm and that their familial relationships are preserved wherever possible. Let us advocate for a future where safeguarding equally respects a child's need for security and their right to sustaining relationships that define their upbringing.
Sign this petition to urge the UK Government to take immediate action and protect the emotional well-being of children across the nation.
