Revert Proposed Conversion of (Nottingham)Hospital Chapel and reinstate the Crucifix/Cross

The Issue

We, the undersigned, hereby petition against the proposed conversion of the Hospital Chapel at Nottingham University Hospitals, City campus, into a multifaith room and the removal of the prominent Cross/Crucifix from the main wall.

The Chapel has been a significant space for staff, patients, and visitors, serving as a place for silent prayer, reflection, and group services. The focal point, the Cross/Crucifix on the main wall, symbolizes the core beliefs of Christianity and holds immense importance to Christian staff, patients, and their relatives.

The sudden removal of the Cross/Crucifix is deeply distressing to our Christian community, as it contradicts the core theme of our faith and infringes upon our religious beliefs. We advocate for maintaining the Chapel as a dedicated Christian space while welcoming the idea of a separate multifaith room in another location within the hospital.

We appeal to the hospital team to uphold the values of diversity and inclusion by respecting the identity of each religious group. We seek the same freedom enjoyed by another religious group in their South corridor Prayer rooms. Any refusal to do so would be seen as discriminatory and contrary to the Trust's values and behaviors, adversely affecting the well-being of staff, patients, and relatives.

Therefore, we earnestly request the hospital CEO and the director board to reconsider the proposed conversion, reinstate the Cross/Crucifix on the main wall, and ensure full accessibility to the Chapel for Christian services and personal prayers. This petition serves as a call to action to rectify the current situation and reaffirm the importance of representing various religious and cultural beliefs on campus while promoting mutual respect among staff, patients, and relatives.
