Nearly 500 supporters—and still no response from Halton

What an inspiring showing these last 24 hours! We are nearing 500 signatures and expect to hit that today. If everyone were to get just ONE friend, colleague, or neighbour to also sign, we'll easily hit 1,000 supporters. 

Perhaps less inspiring—Halton still hasn't responded in a meaningful way despite open letters, emails sent to Chair and Councillors, and press coverage in the Toronto Star, CBC, CP24, Financial Post, Global News, Halton Hills Today, and more. Not to mention this petition, which is being shared passionately on Reddit, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and X by all of you!

A canned response by a Halton Region spokesperson declared to a media outlet that the decision was mandated by the Province's Bill 23—the More Homes, Built Faster Act. That Bill does include amendments to the Ontario Heritage Act (OHA), which is different and distinct from Heritage Services and their mandate. The OHA changes, while also a devastating blow in their own right, are specifically related to PROPERTY designations and related by-laws. What did Halton Region see in Bill 23 that led them to jump to the conclusion that Heritage Services must so swiftly cease operations in response? 

We've also not been able to get our hands on the confidential report that apparently drove Council to vote (in a closed-door meeting) in this way. If the decision was simply in response to Bill 23, why is the report so confidential? 

Finally, one email from a Councillor suggested the decision was made so as not to impose a tax increase on residents. This rationale also is not logical, as Heritage Services has been a key pillar of the Region's strategic plan and budget already, including the $8M that was earmarked and budgeted for a new Heritage facility. 

Today we will be interviewed by Village Media (who operate Milton Today, Halton Hills Today, Burlington Today, Oakville News, and more) and will be sharing the passion and determination of the community to have Halton Region reverse course on this dangerous decision, and bring the process into the light of day with transparency, honesty, and accountability.
