To the excitement of many Dexter fans, in April 2025 Showtime and Paramount+ announced they would renew Dexter: Original Sin for a second season. However, on the 22nd of August 2025, to the dismay of many, it was announced that the renewal was reversed, and the series was cancelled.

This decision is mainly theorised to stem from the comparatively low ratings that Dexter: Original Sin received in comparison to Dexter: Resurrection. This corporate decision fails to take into account the true audience reception of the series (which was largely positive for the series' fresh perspective, compelling performances and great storytelling), leaving the gripping insight into the origins of Dexter unfinished.
