The recent decision by the Newry, Mourne, and Down District Council to designate our local area as a sanctuary area has sparked a significant amount of concern among residents. While the intention behind providing refuge and support to those in need is commendable, we believe that such a designation might have unanticipated repercussions on the community's economic, social, and infrastructural frameworks.

Newry and Mourne boast a vibrant community with a delicate balance of resources that could be strained under the sanctuary designation. Our local businesses, educational institutions, and healthcare services are already operating at near-capacity. Adding the responsibility of a sanctuary area might overextend these crucial services, leading to potential negative impacts on the quality of life for current residents and those seeking sanctuary.

The decision could also affect the local job market. Businesses may face additional pressures related to workforce supply and demand, and this potentially exacerbates unemployment issues in the region. Moreover, the designation could impact public safety and local housing markets, as available spaces become scarcer and prices rise, making it even more challenging for current residents to live affordably.

On a broader scale, establishing Newry and Mourne as a sanctuary area could set a precedent that pressures surrounding regions to adopt similar stances without adequately considering individual community capacities or resources. This may inadvertently create a network of areas struggling to meet the needs of both new arrivals and long-established residents.

We urge the Newry, Mourne, and Down District Council to reconsider their decision and engage the community in meaningful dialogue to address this pressing issue. Sign this petition if you agree that a comprehensive review and alternative measures are essential for maintaining our community's well-being.
