Reverse Mental Health Funding Cuts

The Issue

To: Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, NHS England, UK Government
The UK’s mental health system is already in crisis. Long waiting lists, overwhelmed services, and a lack of culturally competent care mean that too many people, especially Black communities are struggling to access support.

Now, things are set to get even worse. The Labour government has confirmed that the share of NHS funding allocated to mental health will fall again in 2025/26, despite rising demand.

This is unacceptable. 1 in 4 people experience a mental health problem each year, and mental health conditions make up 20% of the NHS’s workload. Cutting investment will mean more delays, more suffering, and deeper inequalities—particularly for Black communities, who already face:

Longer wait times for talking therapies and early intervention
Higher rates of crisis interventions and coercion under the Mental Health Act
Limited access to culturally competent and community-based support
Without proper funding, these issues will worsen. Black communities will continue to be ignored, and more people will be pushed into crisis.

Who We Are
Black Thrive Global works to address the systemic barriers that negatively impact the mental health and well-being of Black people in the UK. We advocate for policies and services that centre racial equity, lived experience, and community-led solutions, because Black people deserve mental health care that is fair, accessible, and culturally appropriate.

We Demand Urgent Action:
1️⃣ Reverse the funding cuts and increase investment in mental health services.
2️⃣ Ensure funding reaches Black communities by expanding culturally competent, Black-led mental health support.
3️⃣ Tackle racial disparities in mental health care, including long wait times and disproportionate detentions.

📢 Sign this petition to demand justice for Black mental health! Let’s hold the government accountable and push for a fairer, better-funded mental health system.
