Reverse John Key’s Housing Legacy – Reset the Housing Market Now

The issue

New Zealand’s housing crisis is tearing our social fabric apart and it was not an accident. It was engineered through deliberate policies that prioritised profit over people.

During John Key’s time as Prime Minister (2008–2016), the government sold off thousands of state homes, failed to tax housing speculation, and turned a blind eye to rising rents and growing homelessness. For over a decade, property investors flourished while renters and working families were pushed into overcrowding, insecurity, or out of the housing market entirely.

Today, the results are clear:

Young New Zealanders can't afford homes or even stable rentals.
Families are stuck in motels, emergency housing, or sleeping in cars.
The state housing waitlist has exploded to historic levels.
Teachers, nurses, and essential workers can’t afford to live in the cities they serve.
This is not just a housing crisis. It’s a crisis of justice, of equity, of hope.

If we don’t act now, the next generation will inherit a country where home ownership is a myth and renting means permanent insecurity.

But it doesn’t have to be this way.

We can reverse this. We can fix what was broken. We can choose homes before profits.

💥 Here’s What We’re Demanding:
A Capital Gains Tax on all investment and secondary properties — to cool speculation and make the system fair
A public housing build programme of 10,000–15,000 homes per year — led by a new National Housing Agency
Rent controls that link increases to inflation — and an end to no-cause evictions
Penalties on vacant homes and land banking — use it or lose it
A permanent ban on foreign buyers of residential property
Legal recognition of housing as a human right — not a financial asset

We can restore the Kiwi dream of a warm, secure, affordable home for everyone — but only if we act now.

Sign the petition and demand that our leaders stop protecting speculators and start protecting people.

Together, we can build a fairer, more secure Aotearoa.

New Zealand’s housing crisis didn’t happen by accident — it was engineered.

Between 2008 and 2016, the government led by John Key fuelled a speculative property boom. Public housing was gutted, capital gains remained untaxed, and regulation favoured investors over people. As a result, a generation of New Zealanders has been locked out of secure, affordable housing.

We are now living with the consequences:

📉 Home ownership at record lows
📈 Rents rising faster than wages
🏚️ State housing waiting lists exploding
💰 Housing wealth concentrated in fewer hands
This wasn’t a market failure. It was a policy failure. And it must be reversed.

🔨 We Demand a National Housing Reset
We call on the Government of New Zealand to implement the following reforms:

Introduce a Capital Gains Tax on all investment and secondary properties
Create a National Housing Construction Agency to build 10,000–15,000 public homes per year
Ban no-cause evictions and limit rent increases to inflation (CPI)
Tax empty homes and penalise land banking
Permanently restrict foreign residential ownership
Enshrine housing as a human right, not a financial asset
