Revamp Western Australian School Schedules for Mental Health

The issue

For students in Western Australia, the struggle with mental health is becoming increasingly prevalent, as school consumes their lives without providing the necessary balance between education and personal well-being. Having experienced this firsthand, I've seen both myself and every single one of my friends grapple with stress and detachment due to the demanding nature of the current school system. We find ourselves in a relentless cycle: school, work, tests, home, study, repeat. Where does the time go for socializing or simply enjoying life? Schools seem preoccupied with trivial matters like uniform regulations and grades rather than fostering a nurturing environment.

Research shows teenagers have a natural tendency to wake later due to their biological clocks. Despite this, school schedules remain rigid, requiring students to rise early and attend lengthy days. Unsurprisingly, this results in students feeling drowsy, unfocused, and overwhelmed in class. Adolescents are currently being held to unreasonable expectations, where lengthy school days prioritize academic pursuits over mental wellness.

Private schools, in particular, impose extended hours that further monopolize students' time, increasing the stress and isolation that many young Western Australians face. According to health experts, stressful school environments are closely linked to increased anxiety and depression in teens. Studies suggest that later school start times have positive outcomes, including better academic performance, improved mood, and enhanced overall health.

This petition seeks to invoke a necessary shift in the current education system: later start times for all schools and a limit on the length of private school days. This initiative aims not only at educational enhancement but also at enriching the mental health of our youth, thus allowing students to engage more fully both inside and outside the classroom. We owe it to our children to offer them an education that doesn’t come at the expense of their mental health.

For the well-being of our future generation, let's advocate for a system that accommodates their natural sleep cycles and provides a balance between academic responsibilities and personal life. Let’s urge the Department of Education in Western Australia to reconsider and restructure school start times and daily duration.

Sign this petition to support a change that could prevent the mental health decline in young Western Australians and offer them a more balanced, fulfilling youth.
