It's a huge day in the fight against sewage pollution as the Labour Party bring forward their Water Quality Sewage Discharge Bill.
We've read it and, on the face of it, it seems a sensible way forward. It is unquestionably much more effective than the Conservative's own sewage reduction plan.
The bill calls for:
- Automatic fines for sewage releases
- A legally-binding 90% reduction target for all releases by the end of 2030
- A stipulation that the cost cannot be passed onto the consumer
Our strong suspicion is that the Conservative Party will once again vote to protect water companies and vote this bill down.
Therefore, if you have the time this morning to write to your local MP and ask them to vote in favour, it would be extremely helpful. You can do so by clicking here.
Also, any pressure on social media before and after this vote, assuming it does get voted down, would be most welcome.
With the local elections taking place next week, today's vote will be a strong indicator of which of the political parties are serious about tackling this issue.
Many thanks,
