Dear friends and supporters,

Earlier this month, with your help, we were able to deliver our petition to Return Lee Point to the care, ownership and protection of Larrakia People to Canberra. You can watch (and share) the video of Senator Lidia Thorpe tabling our petition here or read about it on the National Indigenous Times here.

During our visit to Parliament, with the help of Senator Thorpe’s staff, we had a meeting with the Deputy Chief of Staff for Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek. He pledged to try and get us a meeting with Assistant Defence Minister Matt Thistlethwaite who is in-charge of Defence Housing Australia. We also extended an invitation to Minister Plibersek to visit Lee Point in-person (she’s never been) and to meet with the Larrakia families whose lands she has been making harmful decisions for. Minister Plibersek denied Larrakia Elder's cultural heritage application earlier this year. It's deeply hurtful and undeniably unjust that a non-Larrakia person who has never even been to Lee Point determines what is and isn't sacred Larrakia land.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone who signed, shared, donated, bought a t-shirt, sent an email to an MP, wrote a supportive message or made a phone call to DHA. It helped immensely knowing we had the support of thousands of people backing us.

With our petition now tabled in Federal Parliament we are turning our attention to the NT elections on August 24. We're looking for volunteers in Darwin who are willing to drop flyers in mailboxes in key electorates and put signs on their fences to Return Lee Point to the care, ownership and protection of Larrakia families.

Click here if you’re in Darwin and you’re willing to hang a sign on your fence or help us distribute flyers. In particular, we’re keen to get flyers and signs in the electorates surrounding Lee Point: Casuarina, Johnston, Nightcliff, Fannie Bay.

If you aren’t based in Darwin, but you’d still like to help, you can chip in to cover the costs of printing. Each sign costs roughly $45 and each flyer costs 25c and so a $10 donation = 40 flyers, a $50 donation = one yard sign and a $100 donation = 400 flyers.

If you can’t make a donation, the other way you can help is by sending an email to Matt.Thistlethwaite.MP@aph.gov.au or giving his office a call on (02) 9349 6007. You can tell him you support Larrakia families and our efforts to stop the destruction of our sacred lands and you would like him to direct DHA to stop what they’re doing and return Lee Point to its rightful owners.

With so much gratitude for each and every one of you,

Laniyuk
