Return Hextech Chests and Ban Predatory Money-Making

Return Hextech Chests and Ban Predatory Money-Making
The Issue
Over the past year, Riot Games has made increasingly poor decisions with regards to League of Legends, motivated only by greed and poor problem solving. In 2024, Riot introduced a gacha/gambling system to League of Legends, removed Hextech chests and free player rewards, brought back poor quality skins, and refused to listen to the disdain of their own players when making these changes.
Starting February 9th, please join us for a Boycott of Riot Games to protest these unnecessary changes to the game we all know and love, League of Legends. The Boycott will end on February 23rd, however changes to this date may be made based on Riot's response.
Our Goals:
- Bring back Hextech chests and free rewards.
- Hextech chests were first introduced in January of 2016. They allow players the chance to earn skins and other cosmetics. They also provide players with the materials needed to unlock these rewards, as well as materials used to unlock new champions.
- Remove Gacha and Gambling Mechanics.
- In 2024, Riot introduced chromas and skins only obtainable through a process akin to gambling. Players had a small chance to obtain these cosmetics, with a guarantee to unlock them only after spending over 100 US dollars. Skins purchased in the Sanctum are only guaranteed after the players spends at least 250 US dollars. The chance of obtaining these skins beforehand is a meager 0.5% per pull.
- Riot challenged player backlash claiming the skins were "collector items" as well as claiming the exorbitant price point was an opportunity to fund esports. Collector's items, as defined by Merriam-Webster, are "an item whose rarity or excellence makes it especially worth collecting." An item's rarity or excellence does not need to correspond with it's price, as shown by previous skins released in League of Legends. In regards to esports, the League of Legends esports scene has existed almost since the game was founded. Not only is it hard to believe that Riot has had a difficult time funding esports for the past 10+ years, but esports even brings in money for Riot, with Riot themselves stating that esports does contribute revenue.
- Bring back Mythic Essence on Event Passes
- Recently, Mythic Essence, a crafting material used to obtain skins, was removed from event passes in game. Previous event passes have been available for free and provided a small amount of Mythic essence. If the player purchased the pass for a small amount, they could receive some extra mythic essence from the pass rewards.
- Make Skins Purchasable for ALL Players
- With the introduction of not only Gacha, but also skins only obtainable through an event pass that requires much more time and effort, skins are few and far between for the average player. Most people are unable to spend over $100 for a single skin.
- Bring Back High Quality Skins
- With the start of the 2025 year, Riot re-introduced a low quality tier of skins. These skins have minimal, lackluster effects, with now new recall. Riot also traditionally gave legendary skins new animations, however with the release of recent skins (Chosen of the Wolf Ambessa and Arcane Savior Viktor) these new animations seem to be reserved only for the predatory gacha skins.
Riot Games is a multi-million dollar company with profits reaching over one billion dollars every year. The greed and disrespect they have shown to their loyal players over the past couple of months in unacceptable. As players of League of Legends we must act to remind Riot Games who funds them in the first place.
