It's been a year and I wish I had better news.
DOC has ignored and contradicted the findings of Charlie's Independent Welfare Report. As a result, Charlie continues to be in distress in Dunedin, and DOC keep making up shifting reasons that the Te Anau Bird Sanctuary, Charlie's home of 24 years, is unsuitable for Kākā.
Key points from the welfare report:
*Charlie's move to Dunedin triggered a return of her weaving and other abnormal repetitive behaviors that indicated distress.
*These behaviors and their frequency were cause for concern.
*If Charlie were to stay in Dunedin, the best way to help her would be to stabilize her environment and recreate the Te Anau sanctuary in Dunedin, an impossible task.
Thank you for your past support. We need your help to return Charlie to her caring community and her sanctuary home.
We've started a legal fund for Charlie and you can help bring her home: https://givealittle.co.nz/cause/bring-charlie-girl-home
