The Issue

Dear Prime Minister,

We, Canadians of Iranian heritage, respectfully but firmly protest the final paragraph of the October 28, 2026, Canada–UAE Joint Statement concerning Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb islands in the Persian Gulf.

In the said paragraph, Canada explicitly endorses the UAE’s sovereignty over these islands, characterizes Iran's presence as an occupation, and describes it as a violation of the UAE’s sovereignty and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

We consider this language historically unfounded, one-sided, diplomatically unnecessary, and inconsistent with Canada's commitment to a balanced, responsible foreign policy.  Extensive historical evidence shows that these three islands have longstanding historical and geographical connections to Iran (Persia), predating the UAE's establishment on December 2, 1971.

We fully support Canada's efforts to strengthen its economic, commercial and diplomatic relationships with the UAE and other countries. However, economic cooperation should not require Canada to endorse one country's territorial claims against another.

Canada should focus on expanding trade and investment without becoming involved in territorial disputes amongst other countries. Introducing such a position into a bilateral economic partnership statement was unnecessary and risks undermining Canada’s credibility as an impartial international partner, while setting a potentially problematic precedent for future diplomatic engagements.

We therefore respectfully request the Prime Minister to:

Retract the said paragraph of the October 28, 2026, Canada–UAE Joint Statement
Issue an official clarification confirming Canada’s affirmation of existing internationally recognized borders.
Ensure that future bilateral statements and agreements focus on their intended areas of cooperation and avoid unnecessary endorsements of disputed territorial claims
Finally, we would like to explicitly state that we strongly oppose the Islamic regime in Iran; however, this does not mean that we abandon Iran’s territorial integrity and its sovereignty.

We wish to express our sincere appreciation for your consideration of our request.

Sincerely your;
