Biosafety Now has called for the retraction of yet another paper that falsely claims COVID-19 originated from animals sold at the Wuhan wet market. On Thursday, September 19, members of Biosafety Now formally requested the retraction of "Genetic tracing of market wildlife and viruses at the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic" by Crits-Christoph et al., which was published the same day in Cell.

This marks the fifth scientifically unsound paper on COVID-19’s origins that we have challenged, following our retraction calls for Andersen et al., 2020 (Proximal Origins), Liu et al., 2020, Worobey et al., 2022, and Pekar et al., 2022.

Like its predecessors, Crits-Christoph et al. 2024 is based on invalid premises, draws unsound conclusions, and may involve scientific misconduct, including potential fraud.
