In August 2020, Annamalai entered politics by joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). By July 2021, he was appointed as the State President of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, becoming the youngest person to hold this position. In the 2021 Tamil Nadu state assembly elections, he contested from the Aravakurichi constituency but was unsuccessful. ​
